Frieze Talks 2014

Screening: The Act of Killing, (The Director’s Cut)

Monday May 12th, 12:00 pm – 2:40 pm

A special screening of the The Act of Killing (2012, Joshua Oppenheimer), the Academy Award-nominated and BAFTA-winning documentary that takes the viewer on a journey into the memories and imagination of the perpetrators of the Indonesian genocide in 1965–6. The director’s cut – which has never been shown in theaters in the US – is the definitive version of The Act of Killing, the full culmination of Oppenheimer’s eight-year journey making the film. The film’s producer Werner Herzog commented: ‘Joshua Oppenheimer’s film is much more than a political documentary. It is a masterpiece of filmmaking, full of depth, surrealism, and stunning silences that will outlive the political message. Have patience. In half a century from now, this film will still stand out as something no one has ever seen before, and no one will ever see again. And it is the director’s cut that will be the only version remaining.’
