Axel Vervoordt is the founder of the eponymous company which spans art and antiques, interior design, real estate and contemporary art galleries in Antwerp and Hong Kong. A strong supporter of ZERO and Gutai art movements from its inception, the gallery has gradually evolved into working with contemporary art, with a special interest in the concept of the void, space and time. Since 1998, the company has gradually moved to Kanaal, a vast industrial site close to Antwerp that is being renovated for mixed commercial and residential use.
In 2007, Vervoordt embarked upon a series of exhibitions at the Palazzo Fortuny, Venice, coinciding with the Venice Art Biennale, which has been widely critically acclaimed. The last of these, ‘Intuition’, runs until 26 November. In 2008, he created the Axel & May Vervoordt Foundation, over which he presides. Part of the Foundation’s extensive collection will be housed on the Kanaal site when it is completed in November.
