Frances Stark

Trapped in the VIP and/or In Mr. Martin’s Inoperable Cadillac (2012)

Frances Stark is a visual artist and writer working with drawings, collages, videos and performances. For Frieze Sounds, she continued her investigation of the generative power of language as seen in My Best Thing, her highly acclaimed video first shown at the Venice Biennale in 2011. For this project, Stark presented Trapped in the VIP and/or In Mr. Martin’s Inoperable Cadillac, a sound work in which the artist narrates the adventures she went through in the making of this piece: from her initial idea to record a conversation between mocking birds outside her house, to the investigation of the doubly apt title ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’, to end up working together with an unlikely collaborator, all following the notes of the divertimento ‘Das Echo’ by Joseph Haydn.
