Frieze Projects 2013

Mateo Tannatt

Los Angeles-based artist Mateo Tannatt uses sculpture as a platform for performance, video, photography and painting. He creates landscapes of objects and props that are often brought to life by actors and performers. For Frieze Projects, Tannatt crafted seven individual sculptures to interrupt and punctuate the fair. Each of these seven situations were activated by scripted performances and written texts. Viewers were invited to sit and use the sculptures as part of the performance. Based on the subjective association of color, and the effect of public sculpture, this project not only offered viewers a resting point but also provided temporary stages for public theater, bringing the monumental into the everyday.
