The New Museum launches an USD$80 million campaign and the Turner Prize shortlist is announced

  • Michael Dean, Anthea HamiltonHelen Marten and Josephine Pryde have been named on the shortlist for this year's Turner Prize. Each of the artists will present works in an exhibition at Tate Britain, London, in late September, with a winner being announced in December.
     
  • The New Museum in New York is launching an USD$80 million campaign to renovate its adjacent property at 231 Bowery and support the future growth of its program. The campaign, which has already received USD$43 million in donations from members of the board, marks both the museum’s fortieth anniversary and its tenth year on the Bowery.
     
  • Five members of the Egyptian performance collective Awlad el-Shawarea (Street Children) have been arrested in Cairo over a video mocking president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and his supporters. These are the latest in a string of arrests made following the anti-government protests in the capital last month.
     
  • The French painter, sculptor and light artist François Morellet has died, aged 90. Morellet, a key member of the 1960s Paris-based collective Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel (GRAV), is currently the subject of solo exhibitions at Annely Juda Fine Art and the Mayor Gallery, both London, Dan Galerie, São Paulo, Galerie M, Bochum, and Art Affairs, Amsterdam. (French)
     
  • Patrick Hough and Lawrence Lek have been announced as the recipients of the 2017 Jerwood/FVU Awards. Each artist will receive GBP£20,000 to develop new moving-image works for an exhibition that will take place in spring of next year.
